Thomas Peele: Trump poses free speech threat

The last question an editor asked when I interviewed for a reporting job in Atlantic City in 1993 went like this: What will you do when Donald Trump tells you that if you print something he does not like, he’ll sue you?

Tell you, then go write the story, I answered. Sure enough, a few years later, when Trump was engaged in a nasty turf war with state government and other casino owners and developers, his full wrath emerged.

Now it is not. And nothing shows the onion-skinned bully of Atlantic City has changed. If Trump’s on the Capitol steps come Jan. twenty it will be freedom of speech’s darkest hour.

Thankfully, First Amendment law evolved.
